Paul Rand: The man who influenced my entire design career.

Paul Rand

Paul Rand had a profound influence on my work. He was the reason I’ve dedicated my entire career to corporate and product brand design.

Paul Rand (1914-1996) was an American art director and graphic designer best known for his corporate identity design work. Besides the infamous Next logo designed for Steve Jobs, Rand designed some of the most iconic and recognized corporate design for IBM, UPS, ABC, Westinghouse and Morningstar. He was one of the first American designer to adopt and practice the Swiss Style of graphic design in corporate identity design.

Although I never met in person, he was my hero.

All of us have mentors who impact and direct our professional lives. My career has spanned nearly four decades now and his influence continues to guide and inform my work and my value system in creativity, design and communications to this day.

In this post, I’m sharing a selection of my corporate and brand identity design work over the past years. I still hold true to the values of simplicity and clarity in visual communications, much as Rand did in his lifetime. For me, sharing this work is a trip down memory lane as I think about the great clients who have given me the opportunity to do what I love–help organizations transform to higher levels through the strategic use of design.
